Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Belarus and the Kingdom of Belgium were established on 10 March 1992. In August 1994 the Embassy of Belarus was set up in Brussels (combining the functions of Representations of Belarus to the EU and NATO).

In March 1995 the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko visited Belgium and met with the King of the Belgians Albert II, the Prime-Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belgium, the Presidents of the European Parliament and the European Commission. The Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus paid an official visit to Belgium in 1996.

Belgium’s approaches to the development of political dialogue with Belarus are forming in accordance with the common European Union line in relation to our State; there is a current definite trend towards a gradual expansion of political bilateral interaction.

In October 2016, Belarusian governmental delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus Anatoly Kalinin visited Belgium. During the visit the delegation had negotiations in the structures of the European Union, meetings with business representatives, with the management of the largest ports in Belgium, as well as with logistics operators.

In March 2017, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Belgium Didier Reynders paid a visit to Belarus. D.Reynders had the meeting with the Head of State as well as with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus.

Until recently, inter-parliamentary cooperation was limited to contacts within the framework of international parliamentary forums. After the restoration of the friendship group in the new composition of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus in 2016, the Belarusian side resumed work on establishing an interparliamentary dialogue.

In September 2017, the delegation of the Belgian Federal Parliament visited Belarus. Belgian parliamentarians met with members of the House of Representatives and of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, as well as with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus.

Among main bilateral events in the current political interaction are the consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Belarus and Belgium, which held in 2015 and 2017, as well as the opening of the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Belarus in Flanders.
